Wow, I wasn't aware that you could do so much with the sounds. I've played around with the shift+a editor a little bit, but never got anything very satisfying.

I have a humble request to add, if I might. The 5cyl engine from Audi. Just search for "IMSA 90 GTO sound" (without " " for more results) on youtube, or S1 pikes peak, or RS2 or S2. That sound is amazing, and of course a loud BOV is part of the package.

I was thinking maybe for the FXR, since Audi has quattro, but the XRR/XRT is also good if those are easier (I don't know how it works)

edit: some example videos:
IMSA 90 GTO :nut:
Audi RS2 Where did he go?
S2 on straight

Some crackling and popping would be nice if that's possible, but again, I don't know how it works or the limitations when you use sample sounds.

Quote from G!NhO :ok in what cars do you use flappies than?

As I said, in cars that have flappy paddles. Maybe flappy is the wrong word, I don't know. I just hear "flappy paddles" all the times. I mean this. Correct?

The BF1, for example, has that, right? I might be wrong, but I imagined so. My point is I use the same type as the car I'm driving has.

edit: typo.

I use the flappies on cars that have flappies, sequential shifter on the cars that have sequential shifters and H-box on the cars that have H-box. Because that's the way it is. I don't race to be ranking top #10, but to have fun, and realism is fun, so. If you use flappies on the XRT, you might as well use bird-eye or chase view or whatever it's called, because you see more of what's going on on your sides.

I don't know if it would have any competitors in the same class, but the Audi RS2 would be nice. No electronics, just quattro and that wonderful 315hp 5cyl engine. But if it was to be added, I demand proper recordings of the engine and exhaust sound. That engine deserves it.

Oh btw; IMSA 90 GTO as well, thank you very much.

The Force Feedback is a signal generated by the game (code), translated by the driver, and sent through the USB port (digital pulses) to your wheel. Correct? Is it not possible to send this signal over a network and receive it on another wheel connected to another PC with the exact same drivers? In theory of course. Not practically doable I assume.

It doesn't matter much. I don't have many posts here, but I've been lurking the forums for a couple of years from time to time and you are a profiled creature for course. You have many good opinions and interesting points, but I think it's a shame you drag many of your posts into the mud by ending so many of them with a serious bashing. In the way of exaggerated adjectives and ways you would like to see them suffer and so on. There's ignorance and there's respect. You seem to have most of the first, from reading your posts. Of course, I don't draw conclusions on forum impressions, I just read. It's entertaining most of the time

This is however totally OT, so sorry about that. Just felt like explaining.

I meant the ghost car being yourself driving your best lap so far, not the WR or anyone else. That way you could follow your own progress. But sure, I see your point about advantages and I agree it is probably best left out of this particular game after all since many people strive (?) for realism by remover HUD and other typical "game" elements to make get more immersed, and also of course the optional ghost car. Maybe giving others an advantage in a later race.

(Tristan) "the skill, and surely the fun, of hotlapping is driving quickly, not copying the car in front"

You would still need skill and quick driving to overtake your ghost, which is the point as I see it. What is more fun than overtaking your previous best lap, knowing you have improved? But as the happy finn says, I never meant for it to take the time of other projects' coding time. It's not a nescessity at all. Just a fun feature.

Quote from tristancliffe :I hope LFS never includes ghostcars. What a complete waste of time - the skill, and surely the fun, of hotlapping is driving quickly, not copying the car in front. If you want lame ghost cars to make you quicker go and play Gran Turismo.

Quoted for untruth. Why would it bother you that there was an optional ghost car available? You could just turn it off. I think it would be quite useful. Set your mind not to follow him but to beat him. Try a new line or braking point, and if you catch up, you know you have improved. If the ghost car was visible in replays as well, you could see exactly where and how you gained/lost time. This is probably the same job this "LFS Analyze" program does, which I haven't tried, but is probably easier.

-87 here, and most of it applies to me. Maybe because the norwegian viking spirit lives inside me Or maybe I should just blame my good parents for not letting me ruin my back and social life by sitting inside all day. But I still got into technology and work daily with computers and electronics in a major global corporation. Go figure!

In Norway today, a police department claimed they will switch all their police cars with electric cars which are very fast, 100% silent and low cost. Hah! I actually smiled that, even if it was obvious. And www.statkraft.no claims to have discovered "Star energy" as an alternate power source.

I have an airgun. Weihrauch HW30S. Not very powerful in airgun-matters (<200m/s), but a very accurate and comfortable trigger and super accuracy. Just bought it before christmas though, so I haven't tried it much yet. Just killed some soda cans and crackers. I really don't want a real gun and the responsibility that comes with it. I'm glad Norway has strict gun laws. If I should get one, it would be a .308 hunting rifle or something like that. For target shooting and maybe an occational hunting trip.

I fear S3 is quite a while away. Maybe several years? And it doesn't bother me really, because S2 is great and it's not even finished yet. So the devs can take whatever time they want to make S3 even greater

Quote from Polyracer :...
Children like to feel that they are doing it for real - but give them accurate physics and they will soon complain about how slow the game feels and how hard it is to stay on the track. ...

That is true. But the children interested in this game (age 10-12 and up?) can play on standard settings and think the noise and the speed is awesome. Adults can play on professional settings and enjoy the skill it takes to manhandle a powerful RWD car, or any car for that matter. I've let my brother (36) try it. My dad. A lot of friends etc etc. They sit down in the cockpit, shift it to first and can't seem to go anywhere. They have huge trouble. Friends that claim to be "racing game lovers" get pissed off because they spin out all the time or they understeer into other cars losing lots of time. I sit myself down and halves their lap times without effort. The same friends that introduced me to LFS because they found an article about the S2 demo on a webpage and thought it was kinda cool with the realism. They got sick and tired of the difficulty being >regular, but I stuck with it loving the challenge.

I kind of give up. I will enjoy both games anyways and people can be as prejudging as they want. Standard/Pro settings really make an immense difference.

Quote from HUN :Driving in GT5 is fun but it doesn't make me try to beat my best lap by a fraction of a second, if you know what I mean.

Agreed. It is not as motivating to improve over and over again. It's more about the joy of driving and mastering the driving itself. And of course overtaking others and winning laps. But yes, I agree that LFS is more motivational to improve yourself.

Quote from spanks :when their marketing department decides to register that as trademark and feels they would get more money advertising it as a sim

:slap:

Why does the people behin the game keep coming up? I sense a general hate against anything commercial in here. I'm sure that the moment LFS was to be found in the shelves of a game shop, you would all quit because they "sold out"?.

I see me and Jibber is pretty much at the same page. There are many definitions to "simulator", but I like this one:

"To create the effect or appearance of."

Surely, with GT5p's graphics and detailed cockpit-view, sound, real life thourougly reacreated cars and tracks along with demanding physics, it qualifies as a simulator.

So does LFS with its superb physics but lesser graphics and sound effects.
I guess Gran Turismo is more comparable to the driving experience as a whole, while LFS is more comparable to the technique and skill it takes to race a car around a track with lots of other cars without crashing.

Some people's attitude and prejudism (spelling?) in here is just ridiculous. If I could shoot the head off of every subjective fanatic I see, I probably wouldn't, but the thought struck me. I think this is showing a bad face for a part of the LFS community. Not being able/willing to look out of the small box. It sort of pisses me off when people see a video or two and say "oh holy mackerel, that is some nasty ass bad physics. Good graphics though, but I'm really not into graphics. I'm too politically correct to admit that graphics help immersion a lot."

I can't wait to get back into LFS, because I love the mature community, in despite of the above mentioned, I love the clean races and the versatility of the physics. And I love the way the devs for the most part give us what we want. I've been away from the game for a couple of years, but I've read through patch Y release notes and it looks amazing!

Just had to blow off some steam there. Please, check things out more before coming here all pretentious and all-knowing. And best of all, try it for yourself with a good wheel and everything set to "sim".

edit:
Quote : If it won't get them enough money in return they won't do it. And when I say real I mean physics that are at least as detailed as LFS' or better.

Oh please, for god's sake. When you say real you mean like LFS or better? I thought LFS was king of the hill, top of the cake and everything? Patch Y (which you obviously know about) has better physics than the first S2 alpha release, right? So if GT5 had physics like the first S2 alpha release today, you would still whine about it being arcade and not real enough because it's not identical to patch Y?

LFS has the best physics I've ever tried. If GT5's physics were even CLOSE, I would call it the perfect driving experience in your livingroom. But it isn't. It's just sufficient, as I've stated many times before. NFS is rock bottom. And this is GT5:P we have now btw. If you want to comment on the coming GT5, check out Gtplanet.com first for the latest news on that matter. Don't dismiss the fact that they might update stuff for the full game. Like weather, even more sim-options for those who'd like it etc. Maybe you're right about them being greedy SOB's, but since there has been a lot of positive feedback to them about the new physics and a new mass of players becomes interested, why shouldn't they grasp the opportunity and add even more realism to please the new group of people who might buy the coming game. As you say, "they have the money" ...to both dumb it down and notch it up in the same box.

Quote from jaws99 :I don't think the pro mode is that much more realistic than the standard, it's just massive understeer at every single corner no matter how fast you enter, or what car you are driving.
...

No, it's not. Simple as that. Appropriate settings before you can ever think to begin to compare anything:

Professional physics, a proper wheel (DFP/G25 or similar. For drive feel of course, not car behaviour), Force feedback mode set to "Simulation", all electronic aids off (ABS, ASM/ESP, TC etc etc). With this you will find that some cars understeer badly, some cars oversteer badly, while some are great at cornering. Once S-class is unlocked, you've got the QTS where you can tune toe, camber, ride height etc to enhance your cornering.

And in the high speed bends (like on high speed ring and daytona speedway) yes of course you will understeer, because of one or both of these: your car is 4wd/fwd and you are too hard on the throttle, or the combination of downforce and too high speed.

I'm still not saying it's as good as LFS, but I'm still saying it is sufficient, as I described in a long post a few pages ago. Read it before commenting on this last bit.

Try the Lotus 111R tuned, which is a cheap car and a perfect showcase for great handling.

Quote from Whitmore :While this is a common misconception, the draft isn't due to a vacuum left behind the car in front, and its effects do extend many car lengths behind the lead car. The air (or wake) behind the leading car is dragged along in the direction of the leading car. You can see this if you watch leaves/paper on the road in the wake of a car, or feel it if you stand at the side of the road as a large vehicle such as a bus or truck passes. This air velocity reduces the relative velocity of the following car to the surrounding air, reducing its drag and resulting in a tow.

Quote from tristancliffe :And the air having a speed means it has a lower pressure, which is the definition of a partial vacuum, which is what he alluded to.

Thank you gentlemen. That explains a bit.

Quote from jibber :It's not there anymore... dunno if it's a different story when you don't play it on simulation mode, but in simulation mode, the catch-up system is gone. However, the AI is incredibly dumb and slow.

The AI is still pretty dumb, yes. But when driving/racing I always assume everyone else than me is dumb, just for precaution. The AI will be pretty brutal at times, but I've been suprised many times as well, in a good way, by how they react to my presence. I don't agree that they are slow though. There are many races that are incredibly hard to beat. If you're a god, you might get 3rd place and get some prize money. If you turn over to the dark side (standard physics) you can get 3rd consistantly with some practice, but there are still a lot of hard opponents to beat. Like in real life. I think it's a good thing that the AI doesn't behave like they're a bunch of clones, but different people with different styles and skill.

Quote from Tisza :I don't know how can someone compare LFS to GT5 and the developers to sony...the sony sh*ts on you...can you call the sony devs OUR devs? No.. but Scawen's team is OUR team... i mean WE develop the game 2gether. About the game, i haven't played it yet, but not I'm not willing to. I saw the graphics, that's great, but as far as i heard its still arcade, and arcade SUX! Byez

When someone drives well in LFS and you watch an out-of-car camera, it also looks easy and arcade-ish. If you watch motorsport on TV it looks arcade because they know what they are doing. You need to get in front of the G25 and drive yourself to know if it's arcade.

I've been playing GT5p for quite som hours this past week now and it is really challenging and enjoyable. And no, not in the same way NFS can be challenging. Overtaking in certain corners is challenging, but only in some cars and with a certain setup. The tuning actually makes a difference, but not in the same degree as LFS of course. I would be playing LFS as well right now if I didn't just have a bunch of laptops.

One story from GT5p: I was driving the F40 at suzuka gt (which is my favorite combination) and had just gotten out of all the tight corners on the way up from the straight to the upper part of the track with one guy left to overtake. I plan to overtake him on the inside of the wide left bend since I know I have better grip than him, but I misshift on my way from 3rd to 4th, I lose speed and I end up right behind him. Semi-panicking I shift into 4th and floor it in the middle of the bend which is a bad idea since the slipstream reduces my downforce and fair enough, I spin out and 7-8 cars pass me while I crawl out of the sand.

One of few things about the physics that really annoys me though is how far behind a car you can feel the draft begin to work. Already at a distance of 4 or 5 car lenghts you can hear the wind go silent and you swoop by him. I refuse to believe that the vacuum left behind by him lasts that long, even in 280-290kph.
